What use is a soldier who won’t obey orders?
Sent home from the violent frontier of the Theos Empire in disgrace, Amiel is dragged before her old commander for punishment. Her penance? A suicide mission into the wild, uncharted forests to the west, where she must hunt down and kill a mysterious warlord named Decius. THE SECOND RESURRECTION
Haunted by what he saw deep in the trees, Axel flees through the forest. Behind him, the howls and shrieks of frenzied killers, hunting him.
At last, he breaks free, into the sunlight. Rescued by soldiers besieged in an abandoned town, they tell him the men and women hunting him are a deranged death cult, worshipping the god Decius.
Axel saw Decius die. It’s not possible that he has followers already. Ones who indoctrinate new members with blind, unquestioning faith… and sadistically punish those who waver.
How can the cult of the Second Resurrection exist?
But that’s only the start of what’s not possible. Time has stopped making sense. Was it a week since Axel entered the forest, or decades? Has something gone wrong around him, or did that forest… do something to his mind?
As the siege wears on, and their numbers dwindle, Axel and the soldiers must stay strong together… or break. Their survival, their sanity, depend on it. He may never find answers, but there’s one thing Axel is certain of, and it terrifies him.
The cult’s god might be dead, but their devil still lives.

Jon Barghest grew up in North Yorkshire, where he developed a keen interest in folklore and mythology. Beginning writing at the age of 14, he finally met success when his first novel, a dark examination of mythology and madness titled Bury Me Where They Fall. Since then, he has had stories published in the folklore, mythology, horror, sci-fi and fantasy genres, with many more to come. Working full-time as a Senior Copywriter, along with writing his fiction, Jon spends rather a lot of time with the written word. But when he isn’t doing that, he likes to visit ancient ruins and see bands.
